the beaches of new york city represent a unique intersection: good-natured fun in the sun, and outer-borough New york city grittiness.
i love this combination.
i wanted to create a typeface that celebrates this unique and utterly east coast identity.
bronx riviera is a little bit threatening on its exterior, but full of fun and warmTH on the inside.
THE PUBLICATION SHOWN IS “THE ROCKS,” A ZINE WHOSE SUBJECTMATTER COVERS ALL THINGS NYC BEACHES.
I drew inspiration from blackletter type, which is very macho and threatening-looking.
Starting in that world, I wanted to tone down the drama of blackletter and add some playfulness and fun to express that beachy feeling.
To achieve these goals, I rounded the points of the strokes, toned down the contrast in line weight, and set each vertical stroke on a laid-back wave.
